AI Summary:

The talk explores the concept of the "embryo of awakening potential" within Zen philosophy, particularly the idea of the Tathagata and the moment of conception as a metaphor for understanding one's existence. The speaker illustrates how this embryonic state symbolizes life’s interconnectedness through concepts like the length of life, warmth, and consciousness, which are inherent from conception and linked to past interactions with beings and Buddhas. The discussion emphasizes the importance of Zazen, or Zen meditation, as a method to achieve one-pointed awareness, likening the meditative state to returning to the origin of one's existence akin to the moment of conception. This practice enables an experiential understanding of truth and beauty beyond mere intellectual comprehension.

  • The Lotus Sutra: This text is referenced for its mention of the results of human embodiment and connections to past lives and beings, which is fundamental to understanding one's current existence and potential for spiritual growth.
  • Tathagatagarbha Concept: Explored as the storage consciousness or potential within all beings, emphasizing return to one's origin and innate enlightenment.
  • Embryonic Teaching in Zen: The use of the embryo metaphor highlights the Zen emphasis on understanding existence from its hidden depths beyond the apparent physicality.
  • Zazen (Zen Meditation): Described as a practice to achieve samadhi or one-pointedness, allowing practitioners to experience the profound truth of existence beyond intellectual grasp.

Embryo. So embryo of the Tathagata, you know pretty well embryo. Embryo is the very first state of your existence in this world. the moment when a baby is conceived in mother's womb, that is called implio. So implio is exactly supported, educated, fed by Tathagata or Coming in thusness.

[01:02]

Coming in thusness means that which remains in unknown, in unknown state. Because thusness, thusness means universe, universal, or rhythm of universe, or rhythm of life, open to everything not only human life there is one lesson of life in this life in this world so before you think before you think anyway there is great huge life which constantly remains unknown by anyone. This is a moment when a child is conceived in the mother's womb.

[02:17]

One of ancient Buddhist scriptures mentions about this moment when child is conceived, that moment consists of three things. One is the length, the length of life. Second, warmness. Third, consciousness. The moment, moment is moment. It's called the shortest period of time. That is called moment. Moment when you are conceived in mother's womb, that moment already consists of three points.

[03:20]

The length of life, warmness, consciousness. The length of life means the span of life. Means the moment what you are conceived, right now, right here, consists already of many lives which you did in the past. communicating with many beings, many people, saints and friends and trees, birds, countless beings. You never know. You never know. That is length of life, length of life, span of life in this moment. So that moment is a moment which you have never known, but it is already something deep.

[04:30]

So that's why the moment you sit here is very important for us. The moment you sit down here to listen Buddha's teaching, or sit down here to study, or sit down there... Well, the talk with the people is moment which is unknown, but it has many, many things, rich, very rich. It is very rich. because it has length of life which you have never known. In the Lotus Sutra, the Buddha mentions about the result of your human body, which exists now,

[05:39]

and by which you can practice Buddha way or you can live your life with your body and mind. Because you did many things, you met many beings and you respected many beings with true heart. You served many beings. You served Buddhas, many Buddhas in the past. That's why this is the result of your human body right now. This is a moment. Within the moment, that result exists. That's why Buddha mentions about this moment, consists of the length of life.

[06:42]

Next, that length of life is not something abstract, weak and thick with your head, but it is something alive within the moment that is your body. It's warm. We say warmness. It is not abstract. It is not metaphysical ideas. If it is metaphysical, it's not warm. It's very cold. It is not. The metaphysical idea is just the ideas without the blood circulations. But it is really something warm because it is alive with your body within the moment when the child is conceived. Before you consciously sleep. That is a warmth.

[07:46]

So the moment you are conceived is anyway Pretty important because it has the length of life and also it is not abstract, it is not philosophical idea, it is something warm which is really alive within your body and mind. Next, it is also not only that something warm, You can feel, but also you can understand it with human consciousness. That's why one of the three elements is consciousness. So you cannot blind your mind. So you should use with your mind what the length of life and what is warmness, what is a human body.

[08:50]

We can think, still we can think it. It's not just a sentimental understanding. It's not, it is not romantic. It is romantic because it has a very long length of life. From generation to generation, it's kind of sentimental, romantic, unknown, mysterious, but it's warm because it is alive with you from day to day. And also, it is possible for us to know it. through our body and mind. It is not necessarily always mysterious or mist, cloudy. It's possible. That's why there are many sciences, biology, physics, physiology, many things.

[09:54]

particularly in modern age, in terms of physiology or biology, you can really see this origin of your birth, how the origin of your birth is beginning. We can see it. According to biology, maybe you can trace back to the origin of life. Origin of life. So, this is the moment you are conceived. That is, anyway, the length of life, oneness and consciousness. But this is, they exist right in the middle of the moment before you are conscious of all.

[11:00]

That's why we say Tathagata. Tathagata is coming in thusness. Thusness means coming and going in thusness, natural. Before you think, regardless of whether you like or not, something is coming. Something is here. That's why we say Tathagata. Tathagata is one of the Buddha's name, quality of Buddha's name, who attained, who realized something true, something true. We call Buddha. One of the Buddha's name is also Tathagata because Buddha always exists and help us always just coming in justice, coming and going as natural he can without making lots of troubles anyway, just like a stream of water.

[12:08]

So that's why Tathagatagarbha is anyway storage, the store consciousness of Tathagat. This is embryo. Embryo. The beginning origin of your birth is embryo. Right in the middle of moment when you are conceived in the mother's womb. But that moment is moment, but it's very deep, very deep, as mountains, oceans, and it's very high as mountains. That's why it is unknown. It is that which is unknown to anyone, but it's there, but it's there with you. So, through this body, the idea of Tathagatagarbha is to teach us that.

[13:22]

Let's understand our human body. Let's know, let's know, let us know, let's know human body in terms of biology, physics, and other sciences, religiously, and moral sense in many ways. But still there are lots of things unknown. It is unknown, but it exists with you. kind of, what to say, rumbling of an ocean. Do you understand? Rumbling. Rumbling of oceans. Far from us. Kind of a rumbling of oceans. In San Francisco, you can hear the sound of the boat

[14:24]

At night, sometimes just a little sound. Sometimes you can hear the sound of ocean. It is not clear from where it comes, but you can listen. The situation when your mind and the body is very calm, circumstances are very calm, you can listen to the sound of the ocean, sound of the boat. But we don't know from where it comes. It's very mist, very vague. But a sound you can listen to, you can hear. So it is something unknown, but that unknown is kind of totalitarian. It's already unknown, but it's there.

[15:28]

It's there. It's something exist, existent, and helping your life. So let's understand in human life in terms of physics, psychology or philosophy, any sciences, it's all right, but still there are lots of things we don't know. So let's pay attention to human body, human body which is unknown to anyone, unknown to any sciences. So that is kind of the sound, hearing the sound of the ocean, rumbling of the ocean from far distance, far distance. And then that sound of ocean anyway echo your body. And then your body really creates sound.

[16:33]

echo that sound anyway hit your body and your body anyway accept this sound and create more sound kind of what to say if you in the mountain if you seeing the sound you can hear the echo But that echo, we don't know from where it comes anyway. But the echo is there. We don't know how far it goes and from where it returns. We don't know. But anyway, sound, when you hear the sound, anyway, that sound comes and returns to somewhere.

[17:36]

So that, anyway, what to say, the sound hits your body and goes up again. Do you understand what I mean? That means you can understand human body in terms of sciences, but on the other end, you can see human body, how deep, how sublime it is. At that time, human body, empty, light. In other words, help your body very much. You can take care of your human body very much. appreciate your human body to exist right now. But if you always understand human body just in terms of sciences, well, if you understand human body in terms of certain sciences, you appreciate it.

[18:43]

But if you don't, you don't appreciate it. If you become sick and there is no guarantee to survive, you don't appreciate. But if you understand human body in a deep sense, including knowing state of anyway existence, human body, and also unknown state of human body, At that time, you really appreciate human bodies. That is called Tathagatagarbha. Tathagatagarbha. Then, Guru Shakyamuni talked about this moment when a baby is conceived, so-called koram, koraram, which means one-pointedness.

[19:46]

simply speaking, one moment. So one moment consists of three things I mentioned. This is the origin of your existence. The origin of existence is pretty rich, very deep, beyond your consciousness. And then Buddha Shakyamuni talks about this moment and also in related with this moment when a baby is conceived, Buddha mentions about Zen meditation. Means one-pointedness, samadhi, in Zen meditation. So sit in zazen, so-called with samadhi, concentration, right now, right here, is same as returning to the origin of your birth, moment.

[20:56]

That is called one-pointed mess. That's why sitting in zazen is not only sitting in zazen you want to know. Of course, we can explain it. But practically, if you sit down there, something you can know but something you cannot know because you completely return to origin of the birth. That is a moment. So that's why intellectually you don't understand it, but if you sit down exactly with calm mind and with the concentration, so-called samadhi, one-pointedness, you feel something. You feel something. Something hits you hard. But you don't know what it is. Because it is a truth.

[21:59]

It is a truth. Which comes in justness. which remains unknown. When it is something very true, very pure, it is unknown. It is unknown, but it exists. It's not mysterious. It exists right now. Just like a look at a wonderful masterpiece of a picture painted by a famous painter. Even though you don't have any idea of the painting, the moment we stand up in front of the masterpiece of the picture, you are captured by the beauty of the picture. But you don't know what it is. Completely unknown.

[23:02]

If somebody asks you, what is the beauty of this picture? Where is it? It is in front on, right on the picture, or behind the picture, or right with the picture, or right in the picture, or right on the picture, or right out of the picture, or right within. Whatever you say, it doesn't hit your mind. We don't know. But the moment when you stand up there, you are completely captured by the beauty of the picture. You can feel people talking. You can feel people dancing in the party. Just the pictures. You can feel talking of trees with people completely harmoniously. You can feel the mood of the party painted on the canvas.

[24:09]

It is really true. That is called beauty, really being something pure. That is called coming in justness. We say coming in justness. In Sanskrit, tathagata, we say. We don't know what it is, from where it comes, but it's there. So that is the one-pointedness or moment when you are conceived. So when you sit down, When you sit in zazen with one-pointedness, exactly you can do the same things as the moment which you are conceived. That's why you can feel something very wonderful.

[25:10]

You don't know what it is, but you feel good. But if you try to know what it is with your consciousness, you don't know what it is. So you become very skeptical. In the process of skepticism, still you cannot forget that beauty, attraction of the beauty, impression of the beauty. So still you want to sit down. So constantly, if you want to know the evaluation of the famous painting, anyway, constantly you have to stand up and look at it. If you want to know real picture of your human body and mind, half sublime it is, anyway, constantly sitting zazen right now right here with one pointed nest. Then something happens.

[26:14]

Just like a turn on the switch of a TV set, the whole world comes into one screen. So you can know something, but you don't know what's going on. This is a total picture of your body and mind. That's why we say tathagatagalpa. Then Buddha anyway mentions about the human body simultaneously, that is zazen, setting in meditation. That's why how important setting in meditation is. But in usual everyday life, we are pretty greedy.

[27:21]

Constantly try to know everything clearly and understand everything. But it's very difficult to do that. Of course, you should know. But we are too greedy to know everything. The more you become greedy, the more you are confused. You don't know what's going on there. But I don't mean you should stop knowing, trying to know. You should know it. And you should remember your life is pretty pretty rich of forever. It's very deep. Your whole life You have to continue to know. So, that's why many people are very excited to know constantly, day by day.

[28:30]

The more you can see something unknown, the people try to know more. That is really exciting. That's what people do every day like this. But on the other hand, if you continue to do this, this way, if you continue to live your life like this, in the basis of your life, there is always something restless. the more you become, you become succeed, successful in doing something, the more you can see something restless in the bottom of your life. That's why more create human trouble. So, we should know the two ways. Today I mentioned, let's see human life very deeply into human body and human mind.

[29:36]

Let's see. Deeply. Constantly go deeply. This is one way. Through certain meditation. And at the end, we should know, second point is, we should know how we are living. In what kind of way we are always doing In other words, you should understand the style of your living every day, including lust, anger, hatred, many things. From where they come, how important it is, what is the evaluation, what is the happiness, what is the unhappiness, we should know. It is possible to free from completely ignorance and anger, so to say. Or it is not impossible.

[30:39]

If it is possible, how can we be free from that? So we have to think many things. So two ways. One way is let's go deeply. Jump into the ocean and go deep. bottom of ocean, know what's going on bottom. At the other end, let's see, let's understand well the surface of ocean. What are they? What they are? What kind of things exist? How we live? In what way we are living? We cannot always just go in deep, ignoring, understanding the surface of the world. We live, we create.

[31:42]

So two ways, always. Understanding, and also even though you don't understand, let's go deep. Let's go deep simultaneously, let's understand the surface. And then both come together. This is a total picture of ocean anyway. It's a cold light. They are indentured
