Immediacy and Time in Harmony
Seminar_Zen_and_Psychotherapy
The talk explores the intersection of Zen philosophy and psychotherapy, emphasizing the concepts of immediacy and time. It suggests contrasting Dogen's idea of "placing yourself fully in immediacy" with the notion of simply being in immediacy regardless of choice, prompting an examination of the subtle differences between active engagement and passive experience. Additionally, the discussion extends to the understanding of time, articulating three dimensions: successional time (biological rhythms), contextual time (environmental influences), and gestational time (the unfolding of experiences), inviting participants to explore these aspects of fundamental time.
-
Dogen's Teachings: Dogen introduces the concept of "placing yourself fully in immediacy," which encourages active participation in the present moment as opposed to passively existing within it.
-
Fundamental Time: Three forms of fundamental time are highlighted:
- Successional Time: Refers to the natural rhythms of the body, such as heartbeat and breath.
- Contextual Time: Suggests the influence of surrounding circumstances on one's perception of time.
- Gestational Time: Deals with how experiences develop and change over time, each layer affecting personal experience.
AI Suggested Title: Immediacy and Time in Harmony
from the feeling I had in the discussion before lunch and the discussion I had at lunch that now would be a good time to continue the discussion among ourselves It does seem that some of these concepts and terms need some exploration together. So I'm suggesting that we break up into small groups. And let me suggest a couple subjects. But of course, I can't understand what you're going to talk about anyway, so you can talk about anything.

Don't be constrained by my suggestion. But I'm going to quiz you carefully afterwards. Anyway, my first suggested subject is Dogen's simple statement, place yourself fully in immediacy. Now what I'd like to contrast that with You're always in a media seat whether you like it or not. So what's the difference between just being in immediacy and placing yourself in immediacy?
[02:25]
Now, in the second suggested subject is we have a shared reference point of clock time. Now, to what extent can you feel or make use of the reference point of fundamental time? And the three ways I've suggested to notice fundamental time. One is the successional time of your actual body, heartbeat, breath, metabolism.
[03:42]
That you are time. And the second is contextual time. Yeah. And the third would be gestational time. I've mentioned more than that, but that's my suggestion now. I've mentioned more than that, but those are my suggestions now. Of ways to conceptually notice fundamental time. In your body. And in the way situations establish their own time. And in the way layers of time gestate our experience differently.
[04:48]
Okay, those are my suggestions. And I will finally have...
