vows and sick night thank you very much ah so now we are recording ah
and what i was saying is that ah
that in the case would kidnap haunts as in the case of pure sensation where the discrimination of subject and object do not exist the world of reality is revealed
ah and
these afflicted states of mind become wisdoms
ah so these wisdoms i want to just
i wanted just briefly outline what they are the sanskrit term for this transformation at the base is a pair of rieti which i always feel santa light like pavarotti but
but two very different ones an opera singer and the other is a sanskrit put his term
power key in then he's turning around the light of awareness from the place where we're caught in our own misconceptions and we see
reality we see directly into one's own nature and so on
we'll talk about this with each of the
each of the realms of consciousness ah
the first to the fifth consciousness which are the sense consciousnesses ah become the perfection of action where the wisdom of the all performing so it's ah it's the wisdom of how things unfold in the basis
on the basis of real activity in the world
the six consciousness becomes the profound observing wisdom with is the wisdom by which we take a step back from our activities from our feelings from all from all of those evaluative states
and mind on and and just watch how that unfolds watch out that process unfolding and see that all of our perceptions are the unfolding of this process and perfect of of this process of perception
which we talked about last week which is the process of having an oregon say and i having an object and his case i'm looking at
i'm looking at this is cup which also has an eye on it ah and
the consciousness or mental function which processes processes what i perceive in my organs it's it's transmitted through the optic nerve to my brain and then it is our it becomes
we turn it into something based on our
our experience ah so based on on what's in our storehouse consciousness so in his case mom if you didn't know that this was a cop and you didn't know that it was a hug
constructed in such a way that could hold the water than i'm drinking
you wouldn't know what the hell it is
hum
i they got to some extent we had a wonderful talk this morning by by yoni ah and he was talking about some of his arm
some of his consciousness been
experiences and ah
in my own time which was considerably earlier
probably many of you why i had similar chemically induced experiences
and what i recall after i've told us often what are a call on one such experience which was happened to be very strong ah i was out my friends were sort of carrying shepherding me around because i needed somebody be my caretaker as i wasn't functioning so
well at they bought me an ice cream cone
and they put it in my hand
and for about thirty seconds
i did not know what the hell this thing was
actually i had no idea it was like this cone shaped thing with a on top and i didn't know what you supposed to do with it or what it was and psych
that was perception
before the interposition of
consciousness of i have a liar does the internet makes sense to you know what i'm talking about ah so we have to we must the elia is constantly arising to tell us what is this thing that we're dealing with and you know to some degree it's accurate
it and to some degree it's really inaccurate
and i think that we're experiencing this very much in this arm in this moment when we're really looking at issues of racial justice ah because we may i may perceive somebody of a different color different skin color different size whatever
and think that i know something about that person that's the power of elia and the power of ah
what i'm calling imputation and it
in this form in it's diluted form ah it continues and deepens the delusions i think i know something about this person is approaching me on the street but really i absolutely know nothing
ah lori and i have been talking about this ah in the course of last couple weeks ah and something she drew from a you were on candy swerved you know was you know nothing about a person on the basis of their skin color
and i've tried to i explored that because i have some i noticed that i have some resistance to that idea but the more i explored the more i realize that that's completely true on the basis of skin color i know nothing
i start to put together a story on the basis of all kinds of other hues
then it's not to say that that story is accurate
but the story on the basis of skin color the story on the basis of any one factor that you see in looking at something is
ah is delusional you have to what the elia is doing is putting together it's making a compendium of the heep and melting it altogether and throwing up both the concept and a word so you know like this this
optus to wonderful of them
ah i think it's from warm
it's from some kind some cartoon character of blocking the name in the movie are monsters and monsters executive casualties and you know i could say oh this week is a green painting of monsters inc
and then i look at it you know look at exam at all around as he oh it's a cup when the monsters inc face painted on it which functions just as well
and has absolutely nothing to do the monsters inc is extra you know and it's kind of amusing so
this is when we get to the six consciousness and six conscious the seven contests i'm sorry i'm sorry the seven consciousness which is transformed the seventh consciousness is the consciousness by which we create
our sense of me and mine in i and that is manas ah and when that is transformed at the base it becomes the wisdom of equality so instead of it it shifts the ground from in
instead of the entire world being centered in me which is mostly how we usually think ah we realize that
everyone and everything that we see has an equal place in the universe
and we have to take those things as we take those things on the ground of equality
and then this age consciousness was which is a liar ah
the wonderful quality of elia is that it includes everything that we experience
ah and when that is included and when it's transformed then it becomes the great mirror wisdom so it reflects when it's transformed instead of reflecting things in their individual nature it's just reflecting every
a thing again equally as shaped through the seventh consciousness but it's like a mirror a mirror holds up
not a pure it's a pure mirror
so pure mayor has no distortions it has no curves you know it just reflects everything that has held up in front of it it does not discriminate ah and it does not differentiate it just reflects
so that is what happens ah
this is a long answer to ross's inquiry so it's not just that things are deconstructed it's also the things are transformed into these for wisdoms
so that brings me to the second question that that i had this week ah i talked to a catherine cascade to some of you know in in oregon suzanne teacher
well friend of many of ours
and she wouldn't know why was i teaching this now pliers they teaching about yoga chara and i feel like it ah at though
at our senior student meeting this friday the question came up
what are you studying now and that's that's a really good thing to ask all of you think about what it is you're studying ah in the pandemic and why
hum so why am i studying this why am i teaching this while press on teaching it so that i can actually
understand it and absorb it in greater detail ah because this way of looking at my mind has increasingly appeal to me in recent years
ah and as i said last week it appeals to me as a as a map of the mind not as a model of the mind not as a full scale model but just as the general sense as the way things work
and more closely
what i feel like i'm looking at here is the way that our senses and mind perceive and think and even feel things ah with reference to or through planes of experience
and that lends of experience that experiences what we actually call karma
and so without exception
based on karma based on our past experience we construct or impute meaning
to our thoughts and our perceptions based on our experience we think we know what things are
and what we can begin by begin to do base by using this method
which is an analytical method ah we see
we begin to see what distorted by those experiences and what's distorted by the way those experiences are filtered through our ego or self centredness
and of course the goal
is the transformation of these senses the transformation of our mind leading to a so-called pure seeing and as he know we're going to leave time to discuss what that would that might be as well
at the same time that the the question that comes to me about learning this on them
buddhism as we understand it is a pet
ah and it's a pass that
presumably relieved from collusion to awakening
and the steps on the path or
points of cultivation
and of course we have a we have attention in the zen tradition because it talks about sudden awakening no steps know stages
and yet we also encourage people to cultivate virtues cultivate the precepts cultivate ah
the wholesome states of mind
so
one way of looking at it is the beneficial actions that we do
ah
lead others towards beneficial action themselves and through and to the the healing of circumstances of their lives
and does the same for ourselves
and so along the pass what we're doing by really looking at resources were gradually removing the veils that that sit in front of our eyes ah so that's why i'm studying this deal
myself see more clearly through the delusion of self through self centredness and thereby to help serve people more effectively
now this path you can think of it it's ah
you can think of as if you were learning a musical instrument
ah when you learn a musical instrument you may play exercises or scales are passages and you go over them
over and over again ah you make to them slowly and gradually bring them up to speed until you actually can play that passage ah and gradually you put those you put those skills and abilities together and you can play the
a whole piece of music
and playing the whole piece of music is is the point
but
practicing
is the method ah so ah
and practicing is really different this is why would kick not hand says ah he says zan is not the study of zen
zen his life is very much what zuko she says very much what hose on what what goes on that's me what search says ah
and these doctrinal teachings ah like yoga chara are wonderful analytical methods but they're not necessarily life itself we have to translate this flight playing scales ah and so when you play scales
ah the
the goal is is not to play the scale really well and so the method is not just to be a great analyst but actually to apply this to our lives in other words the goal in the end is to be able to play the to play a work of ah
a piece of music he a
way that is really thoroughly encompassed by your body that you put your heart and you're feeling into and that your free with ah
ah you you break it down into these elements you look at it again and again but in the end when you're looking for is something
that expresses beauty and continuity
and that's that's the point ah
in one of get known haunts book he key quotes one of his vietnamese teachers are way trunk tongue see said this marvelous piece must be played
what is the good of discussing on a masterpiece it is the performance that counts
and i would say it's the performance having a lot of performance and some of you there i'm sure have similar experience has been various arts that performance includes the mistakes the hesitations ah
all of that is included and when you play a piece of music you don't stop you just go on when we make a mistake in our life we just would stop we just go on we acknowledge that mistake but if we if we stop on the mistake then we're missing the rest of our life
so i'm
that's why i'm teaching me that time keeping the soap i want us to me stop there and to see if there's if there are any questions based on this are kind of rant that i've just laid out if you have a question you can raise your hand you can raise your him manually or electronically
sarah

was he sarah lou you can unmute yourself
sorry for but
i have
seizures which breaks the process of perception
breaks we
link between mind and the senses and there are variety of types of seizures sometimes i'm really not at all present and it's only in retrospect that i
i haven't lost consciousness but only in hindsight am i where that i've just had a seizure at other times
ah
ah
i won't be able to recognize it despite my experience and yet knowing the word and things like that
and i've seen this first of all it it it's sort of debilitating in terms of daily life including zazen if i'm having a seizure while i'm sitting but i'm
i'm not sure how this fits in to the overcharge first of all it's not continuous right
but when you were talking about the ice cream cone it's it's
that sounds familiar only this is a sort of
come on
what medically it's defined ah
as an illness not as a on
part of a path towards
i'm achieving
i'm a greater awareness
so gorgeous say something while i'm just not sure how to interpret right or actually one of the things that gets really interesting about this system is that had in an indirect way to system is this cold da
outrun was created to account for that in a certain way the problem with earlier buddhist ah ah psychological systems is that they implied continuity
and so with the creation of ah yoga guitarra
it was a way to account for
the fact that even if there's a break in continuity we can renew continuity
so the break for all of us and is this is one of the of the dorm as which you know which i originated in a few minutes or
d
there's a there's a there's a
he
rubric of dharmas called uncategorized factors and the first one of them is drowsiness which is really it's all sometimes it's called sleep ah and if it's a way to account for
how it is that when we're asleep there's a discontinuity in our consciousness if we fade there's a discontinuity in our consciousness if we have a seizure there's a discontinuity in our consciousness and yet because there is eli of virginiana the storehouse consciousness
when we awaken from that when we return to what we think of as are ordinary consciousness we have right away access to that to that whole store so
you know
when we when we awaken when we arise from fainting or we come out of a coma
in a general sense ah
we're able to renew our perceptions now of course there are also there are organic injuries which would which might block us from doing that but on but the system was was really designed to
to provide continuity in the face of apparent discontinuity so i would say that the other thing i would say is please take care of yourself
that's most important you know to be able to ah take care of yourself ah to be in a safe place in when you feel a
a seizure coming on and to be kind to yourself as your as your coming out of that because it's that's a big deal it's it's a real powerful thing
so does that sit here yes but or the small thank you very much now it it's really it's it's great the system was designed to account for for just that because the previous previous a hobby dharma didn't but my yana rb dharma does so thank you thank you very much they see kickers hand
oh yeah you know am i always draw things back to the four noble truths and i always say okay so how does this relate to the cessation of suffering and i know that alive and yeah know we can water certain seeds and not one of those seeds but can you say a little bit about how we can
activate this model towards the cessation of such a suffering
well for me i activate this model by
again coming back to
ah
my bumper sticker philosophy don't believe everything you think ah so if i look at a situation i
i will ask myself what is it then i'm thinking what is it that i'm feeling right now and in a very practical way of my practice you know if you say something to me that really pisses me off
ah i will i will feel that in an immediate way right we all do sometimes some people are quick some people are less quick armed but that emotion and that's just one of the strong emotions those emotions are very strong these debts and afflict give him
ocean it's an afflicted dharma and so
as i
proceed in practice i can i can recognize
okay this is an afflicted dharma and i'm really feeling it strongly right now and i literally asked myself and i encourage you do the sick
this is what it just feels very real right now how's it going to feel in two hours
how is it gonna feel tonight or tomorrow morning
the thing that you know when the first impact of it arrives it feels like it's the whole world right and it subsumes everything
but several hours later maybe not you know and ah you know it's like the inner new cycle has moved on
no and ah then i can step back and conduct a step back so i take a step back and say okay
is this how am i feeling now what's what is my what's going on in my body right now and then in a more ah
in a less triggered way i can decide is this something i need to explored there's someone in need to talk talk with or is this was just was this a passing storm
and i feel like this method the yoga charm that it has allowed me ah a way to step back from the immediacy of reactivity and recognizing that the reactivity is are a habitual pattern
it was have the wrong and that's that's how that's that's how i one way i think it's useful can i ask also like a so the sit at the six levels of consciousness are the senses and the minds and those are considers army your eight right
yeah the first six saw your senses in the minds can those do not discriminate but then when we get to manas that's the ego and that's where we get feeling and ruminate surges and yet it was creamy dominating that let me get to that in about five minutes on no discrimination happen
in the mind
ah and any weight
let's let me come back to that because that's that's actually the point that i'm that i am meandering towards ah kabir
i was on thank you so good back you a new york ice cream cone
remind me of there's one phrase that everything is just a mere name
i want to know you have anything to
some higher name yeah i don't
i don't think that everything is a mere name i think everything has a name we give every let me say this will give everything a name
without a name
ah
we that's why i said without
without knowing the the phrase ice cream cone ah i don't know what this thing is but you know probably animals have their own kinds of names
based on their experience ah that are that are probably not contingent on language once we learn language
we can't step back from language right it it shapes what the it shapes how we think ah and what we think about things so we can get rid of the names once we have them but this is what what
you're talking about in terms of pure seeing is seeing things somehow independent of their name
and i think i want to return to his later later in the series because i haven't been questioned about that on do we live in that place you know and can we ah can we actually are
i don't think we can live that way
for very long but
ah we all of us have moments of that pure singing pure seem it we have that now it's not it's
it's supposedly
an enlightened state but really all of us have moments of that so
i would eliminate the word mere
because just using that word has a reductive force it's like it it it disempowers
ah the thing that we're perceiving
and in the wisdom of equality
everything has equal value
like okay on i'd like to move on if that's okay
so to review
they're eight kinds of knowledge in overall what recalling the mind
ah and in other in in some of the your guitar texts that global mind
it's called the mind king
ah in sanskrit is called cheetah c i t t a
and so they're eight kinds of knowledge in three categories
the first category is the consciousness of objects
and that concerned sight touch hearing taste smell and mind
which we will mental activity which we will have discussing in a in a couple of minutes ah the second category is what's called manners which is ah basically it's the consciousness of its self consciously
this
it's the consciousness by which we impose this idea of me and i
on everything that we perceive and that we separate by which we separate me from you or me from this cup hum
which is an interesting process because when i hold the cup up to my lips and i drink from it then somehow the border in his cup is no longer separate from high it becomes incorporated in me
ah so that's a very particular activity is this i creation this self creation and everything that we
everything that we perceive is flavored by colored by that that self that self-perception
and then the third category is what's called a liar virginiana or storehouse consciousness
and this is the base of all of our not all of our knowledge it's the base of all of our experience ah
everything that we have done
exists as a ah a seed in the ally of virginiana and so the the mental process than that goes on his
so i see something
and that runs through the mechanism of manas a lot less than new put another they're seeing something
which runs through the mechanism of manas that says i am seeing something
that then goes down to the storehouse consciousness and
quite amazingly sorts through the entire universe of my experience and put together every likely relevant experience or if reverie likely relevant perception and brings that up to consciousness
and so it tells me what i think i'm seeing
and of course we can be deluded about this there's ah
there's the ah
the ancient in probably pre buddhist story about mistaking a
rope and a snake
you know a rope that's that's kind of winding around on the ground has many of the characteristics that are mind what might recognize as a snake or vice versa
and so we can ah
we can be diluted by these experiences in a we can miss identify what it is that we're seeing ah and
we can take it for real we can see a rope and scream and jump
ah
or we can see a snake and think that are that rope and just try to step over get didn't
ah and we see every to be see all these things in peculiar proportion you know what is it
he had i've i've done this to what is it that ah that that makes me yell when i see a mouse
totally harmless miniscule little little animal but arm
somehow it induces fear in me and there's some some culturally programmed ah response i think so
that's really the quick review of these are
of the mind king of these categories of mind
now mano virginiana has which is which is the mind function good the sixth sense
is very interesting in that it ah it has two functions
one function is it it has a coordinating function
that it takes
the information that comes in through our sense organs
added it kind of shots it to the various ah aspect of the they are various areas of our brain by which we can discern things and and it does it very generally very effectively ah you know
usually we don't mistake a site for a smell
ah or something we feel for something we hear so it takes
it takes to
the sense impulses that are coming in through my eye looking at an object and directed towards the visual part of my brain and then back down to the
to to alive viviana and you know it it says oh this is a cop and it's green and has a picture of a character from from monsters inc and on
i'm taking all that information and in bringing it back up and sorting it in a way that hussam some clarity and some specificity whether it is accurate or not
ah and so that's one function of mind the other function of mind which is very interesting is that
the mind itself is a sense oregon
and so
the way the external objects are for the function of our senses
our thoughts are
the objects of our mind does does that make sense
people you follow me
so
i thought your oh i've spent a little further

so let me go over it again among the eight about the the mono vision yarra mind consciousness has kind of the widest range of functioning
for with functions the way that it gathers and discriminates all the sense data coming from the five consciousness
and
it also works with
past and future objects so it's it's going back and looking at the past and comparing what my present perception is to something that happened in the best and it can project into the future like ah oh know i see
i'm almost that of water in this and so when this classes overall go down and get some more ah i can think about the future
ha
so apart from this kind of sorting and coordinating function
ah the mind is also the home to all of our perceptions are emotional feelings are thinking in our intention
and so it it is the ah the host to the the home of all these operations of consciousness it's all taking place in in the mind wherever guess they and point in my head but there's some question about where it is also maybe in in all of the
sign axis of my body in different places on and
so it also is the home to
all of our afflictions are misperceptions are wrong are it's it's were wrong views arise ah and those arising views come up through this the distortion of this self centered
self centered part of the mind mama's tom
so what we're dealing with
cause manners is essentially an unconscious function
what we're dealing with in terms of mine consciousness is that this is the way
we can work with our afflictions and r and r wholesome perceptions
and so
one way that you can think of it is that the mind king which includes the six senses
it includes modest increase a lie officina ah
one analogy is that a lion dances like a dancer
and manas
resembles a jester who is constantly trying to distract and fool the dancer
and that the senses and the mind
our the stage on which all this is taking place
ah
and we get into look into the dorm next the mind the mind is like you can also think of it as the mind ah this monovision vision on is like a screen
and all of the mental factors the dormice which i'm about to delineate our like images that are projected on the screen ah and so as suzuki where she talked about and other people talk about you know usually if for at
the movies were not really seeing the screen were seeing the image but the screen is they're all the time and it's it's a necessary it's this without the screen there are no images
so on
that analogy works as well limp know me to stop for an endless
before i go into the garments which be the last artifice presentation that may just see if there any immediate questions
yeah kabir

your viewed it

stop you in a cake
not a joke if are going
i can hear you are you a question
let me move onto chris evans for the moment
i think user i'm so it's pretty clear that the first six senses somewhere in the mind body whether at the total where the heroes were in the rain not all holistic and but the discovered the banners is a liar this
a bit beyond impressed even also is there any indication on where they reside there are all put those are all part of mind okay that's where that is
we can discuss but they they in the entirety they comprise mind all of it is mind that sort of talked about his mind king is what is what comprises those those three dimensions of of mind or get that includes the or amala the ninth as well in a lie i guess
s does not the ninety eighth relief again for another night just to say because i haven't got but get to this last as some yoga hr systems project a ninth consciousness which is are basically buddha consciousness ah but let's forget about that for
the moment other questions yoni
i'm i'm not sure this question makes sense but i'm having a hard time understanding where where will and like the sort of schopenhauer since of will ah and what volition while what what part of mind and consciousness as desire come
come from rate okay
let me just take one more from joel and then i will answer that question precisely according to my honor i'll be darned
fortunately i mean i can't tell you myself but the abdomen the doctrine tells you a job does a simpler than on okay i'm confused about the relation of manners and manoa your cigarettes
and that's always confused me when you say that on the manas is unconscious that was very helpful but anyway if you can talk about the relation between on the little six anxiousness
i've always been vague about it i think is not simply
everything in the six consciousnesses
with the five senses and and mind consciousness is accessible to us in a conscious way who
manas is like a filter that we can't see that makes that makes us look at everything ah in the context of me
and we tend not to see that you can see it once it's been transformed then you can see an end we can see it you know if we look at our senses ah if we look at our our perceptions which i'm just about to lay out ah in as we look at them carefully
and ah
in the process of our medication then we can we begin to see how we filter how we make everything everything's a bad job you know ah how how
you make jaw the center of the world yeah i don't make joel the center of the world i make allen's entered the world know arm and
as we look we can only find that out by actually looking at our thinking and beginning to see the ways in which that is a distortion
that a purpose of this right well it sounds like practice itself is that saying bringing to some degree of consciousness and deconstructing models
that's that's true
and
ah
for some of us whatever we call practice may or may not be enough
hey i understand he had that it
it's not this is this is in many ways a psychological system in you know some of us need to look at this to a psychological ends ah it just just sitting
may or may not bring us to this awareness so i'm aware that time i'd like to just lay out these
these categories dorm as and i put them in the chat that you can all see it and this gets to on
ah to yoni question
it's not on them
can you see the chair guys it's not in their oh so he joined after the chat was posted about the possible sale
oh there it is about now
is it there now
yes okay maybe i didn't i wrote hundred embedded in send it or something ah so yoni was asking where does all come from
and you know if this is basically this is a the abbey dharma there's there's a number of i'll be darned my systems in in buddhism and this is a mahayana i'll be darned happy dhaba is basically sir the a buddhist analytical commentary and we're not gonna
go through this step by step but ah what it does is it breaks down all of our mental functions into categories
and so here
you have omnipresent factors which are factors that are just ah their qualities these are qualities of awareness or mind that are true for everybody everybody's got them and so it's contact with she just needs soon as you touch yourself you feel something and
sensation which is the next
stage of evaluating whether something is pleasant unpleasant or neutral
and perception is where you begin to discern what the quality of that touch might be
and intention is where so that's i think related to the function of will that uni was talking was asking about our intention is okay what where do i go with this winter we make of this perception and we
we all have this these are all capacities of our mind ah
you then have
the object contingent factors
which on here ah desire is actually a pas the witt frame periods generally a a positive quality it is the know
what draws us to an object ah something that ah
that attracts us like i have the desire to have a sip of water
and that's very refreshing it's not desire in the in the negative form of craving but you have these objects in fact it's all these factors only arise in relationship to things that we perceive
i'm
the third category are wholesome wholesome mental factors and these are very these are parallel you'll see a lot of overlap if we were really going into this you see a lot of overlap with ah with the eightfold path
with the ah
the factors of enlightenment with the parameters and so we you know we see things like faith
and ah
lack of anger flexibility not harming ah those these are also in line with the precepts
though there's a lot of overlap there these a wholesome factors then we have the we have the affliction
you know they have fog are six of the kenneth
over arching ones craving
we'll will pride ignorance doubt an incorrect views and that's a broad category interest in further broken down into these secondary afflictions
ah which are there's twenty of those and you look that list it's like now he's don't sound so good
and then you have six uncategorized factors which are not particular critically karmic ah drowsiness regret discovery and screw now ideally we should really look at all of these one by one but we're not would not have time for
that ah but i want you to think about that these when we when i was talking before about
dharmas are sometimes translated in some of them in some of them in somebody's text or dharmas gets translated as things
or as objects so what i was talking about ah the dharmas are to the functioning of mind as external objects or to the functioning of our five senses this is what i mean does that make sense
this is this is what we are looking this has both this is what we are looking at
ah and everything basically everything that comes up through the senses then gets sorted and referenced ah by way of
one or more of these diamonds so when we're doing meditation ah one of the activities of meditation if you're doing this kind of vacations actually looking at these states to mind so for example when i was saying a while ago that
when i get triggered by anger
i'm the first thing
you know that the habitual thing is to maybe lash out at the person i think who's to blame
i think that the
ballistic stick approach to it is to recognize oh
i'm really angry
and to look at look at the qualities of that anger
you know look i would look at where is it in my body
what are its whether it's characteristic does doesn't burn does an ache does it stick
mom and looking at it very carefully in both in a physical and mental way and
seeing how by bringing the light of awareness to it it changes
so the anger itself not the cause not the person not the event that the angered self in is located in my mind it becomes it's part of my subjectivity rather than projecting an externally which is what i want to do
you know i i really want to do it i really wanted i might really want to lash out at the person who made me angry but if i can step if i take one step back or half step back i can see of this is let me see how my mind is working now
and to examine it by making that emotion whether it's anger or joy ah whether it's anxiety any of these afflicted emotions or any of the positive emotions to make them the object of my awareness
so that second a quick view of the fifty one dharmas and fifty one dharmas this is why we sing this is a map you know ah
you can make your own system
and you might come up with more or less than fifty one you might see with he seemed to be overlapping or whatever but this is just i'm not giving did this to you as as finished doctrine of giving this to as a way to look so that you can actually do your own
investigation and you know be creative find your own systems some aware the time i see two more questions which had like to take due to take before we finish i see john ryder
i i o son army oh i wanna try to get back to the crux of the problem
and and and in in how it's presented here and it for me it seems that it's a it's not us it's after the it was it's at them on a level of mana said the it's at the consciousness that is asserting the cook seat of i am
i'm
yeah i think that's right and that it's like in the center of the system it makes the storehouse something small small in the sun surf
in the sense of what the sense of my view my view of my assertion it makes that infinitude of the storehouse very small small and so far as reflecting the conceit of i am and it also makes on the other side all of the contact
experience through the senses once again back to this conceit of i am it's really right there for me the modest is really bringing everything down and so what suzuki roshi calls small mind i n t the
these two others these wings weather's the storehouse or whether it's your senses in the direct the directness of the census has an infinitude to it an absolute openness to it that the manas does not there is is desperately desperately try
try to a keypad paid so to assert itself yes i i completely agree with you i think that minus is also you can think of it we're going to focus on manas next week but minuses the five clinging scandals it's it's it's the it's the delusion of self and it's the pie
pivot point for all of this also will work on back to that thank you yeah i mean that's a really good point to bring out for every one ah i see jonathan
at you i'm so i know that you said that he didn't intend to proceed one by one to fifty one dharma served this is to and the weeds please feel free to put me off but i was surprised to see
i'm surprised to see it as the eleven wholesome factor is less indifference as one of those factors and pick a bad translation
i i think indifference is like equanimity that can be taking everything as it comes i just think it's to that i'm i'm not in love with with all the translators comes from to gower ah ginny spoke living yoga trial which is very good but i totally think the inc
which is so good ah so yeah as he answered the american differences really taking everything as it comes not it's it's what the the for dancer she said a great way is not difficult for those who only can avoid picking and choosing that that's when indifference means
thank you okay ah
susan had your hand up i don't know if you do anymore
well can you hear me yes this been last question i off i'd put it down because i saw the time but when you were talking about am
this investigation that you were talking about in you're using anger as an example and seem like what what that is his curiosity developing curiosity
but one of them so you don't we have all these overlapping systems right ah one of the first things that when i when i first came to vcc ah this is like thirty five years ago social roshi was talking a lot about these
early buddhist dharma systems and he was talking about the the hindrances he was talking about the factors of enlight many restocked the a full bath and one of the fact one of the factors of enlightenment is investigating the dormice
and i think that's what you're talking about well i mean what struck me when you are talking and it actually earlier when you said indeed just we need to see things independent of their name in order to do that our practice cultivates curiosity yes
and on some kind of spaciousness
that allows the cultivation of curiosity
but i didn't see those words there and maybe those are considered wholesome factors
or they're just not in his system
i'm looking it
i will investigate this ah for net for next week but i i feel like it's included in there i don't know to which you know when you look at these commentaries that commentaries are are kind of endless and so they you know they keep breaking stuff down but i will i will look in
and see if that investigation of that inquiry is actually
interpreters that located in in one of the said it's a six dharma are the the but neither this nor that dharma discovery is how i see or ip it might be yeah i just it also seems to me particularly the beginning of your talk when you were talking about race
ace and recognizing ah
i'm in i'm thinking that there's some idea related to race skin color that on that these are really important factors curiosity and spaciousness that allow us to take time to see the
what we see is maybe not what we see
right and what gets in the way is are kind of clutching add
the notion of i
and the fear of what we might lose what might be taken away from us ah and we're going to we're going to go into that in much greater depth next week when we talk about manas thank you thank you let's let's chant the for
